The Intersection of Golf and Philanthropy: Making a Difference on the Green

Golf has evolved beyond a sport into a powerful platform for charitable initiatives. With over 370 courses and year-round sunshine, Arizona has become a hub for golf tournaments that raise funds and awareness for causes ranging from autism services to community development.

Unomojo, a philanthropic organization dedicated to doing A World of Good, actively sponsors and participates in these tournaments, supporting missions that improve lives. In this article, we’ll explore how golf and philanthropy intersect to create lasting impacts and how you can get involved to make a difference on the green.

From Humble Beginnings to Major Fundraisers

In Arizona, many sanctioned charity golf events occur every month, each supporting unique missions. This shows just how integral golf has become to philanthropy, and how anyone can make a difference by participating.

The tradition of using golf for charitable causes dates back decades. Initially, these events were informal gatherings where players donated to local causes. As their popularity grew, so did their scale. Today, charitable golf tournaments are highly organized, attracting major corporate sponsors, community leaders, and celebrities. These events now serve as critical platforms for raising awareness and funds for a wide range of causes.

Unomojo Making a Difference on the Green

As part of our mission to support A World of Good, Unomojo recently became the title sponsor for the Robin S. Reed Keys to Independence Classic, benefiting Treasure House—a supported living residence for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs). Held at the iconic Arizona Biltmore, the sold-out event raised over $175,000 for Treasure House’s life-changing programs. It was an inspiring day of golf, where we had the chance to meet residents and show support for Kurt Warner, co-founder of Treasure House.

This local success reflects a broader trend in which golf tournaments create significant community impacts. Nationally, events like the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open raise vital funds for specialized pediatric care, ensuring families aren’t turned away due to financial need. Similarly, the Desert Classic Charities in California’s Coachella Valley has raised millions for healthcare, education, and public service programs. Unomojo is proud to contribute to these important causes through our individual giving.

These tournaments showcase golf’s power to bring people together for a purpose—changing lives, one round at a time.

Tournaments Shining a Light on Autism

Golf tournaments have made a significant impact in supporting individuals and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Millions worldwide live with autism, and these events raise awareness and funds for research, therapies, and support programs. For Unomojo, this cause is personal, as our son Payton lives with autism.

Tournaments like the Autism Speaks Golf Classic draw participants and sponsors eager to support autism research and intervention programs. The funds raised provide essential resources for families, expand early intervention services, and drive groundbreaking research aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals with ASD.

Local organizations, such as Civitan Foundation, Inc., which has supported Arizona families affected by autism and other developmental disabilities since 1968, recognize the tremendous value of hosting golf tournaments to raise support.

It’s especially moving to see Treasure House residents golfing at recent events. Golf is an inclusive sport that anyone, regardless of ability, can enjoy. These tournaments not only raise funds but also highlight the limitless potential of individuals with autism.

“You can play if you’re big, small, short, or tall. Anyone can hit the ball!” said Unomojo co-founder Jo Rojas.

“Ultimately, no one is there to judge your performance,” added co-founder Mo Rojas. “It’s a personal journey of improvement that anyone can partake in, regardless of ability, gender, race, age, or physical attribute.”

Another golf-based nonprofit truly embodies the stance of “anyone can golf” is I Got This Foundation, and the newest nonprofit to receive support from Unomojo. I GOT THIS Foundation has a mission to promote golf instruction and playing opportunities for people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.

How to Get Involved in Philanthropic Golf

For golf enthusiasts, there are many ways to get involved and make an impact. Participating in charity golf events is a direct way to contribute while enjoying a day on the course. These tournaments are often open to players of all skill levels, providing a fun experience while supporting meaningful causes.

Beyond playing, you can volunteer at tournaments, assisting with setup, registration, scoring, or logistics. Volunteers play a critical role in ensuring these events run smoothly.

Corporate sponsors can also make a difference by underwriting costs, donating items for auctions, offering prizes, or taking on a larger sponsorship package. Their involvement increases fundraising potential and visibility while aligning their brand with community-focused philanthropy.

Organizing a local charity tournament is another powerful way to create change. Whether supporting a hospital, funding scholarships, or raising awareness for autism, these events can be customized to champion any cause while engaging both individuals and sponsors alike. Golf is more than a sport—it’s a platform for change.
